Different Types Of Breast Forms: Which One Is For You?

Submitted by: Susan J Morris

A few things can be as devastating for a woman like having a mastectomy because of breast cancer. Having a part or the whole breast removed will often make a woman feel unattractive and they would often just stay indoors and sulk in their self-pity. But there is a way for women that have gotten a mastectomy to live a full and active life. Thanks to breast forms.

Breast forms, also called breast prosthesis, are lifelike prosthesis that mimics the shape and feel of a real woman’s breast. They come in a variety of sizes and shapes which is why it can be hard for a woman to know which one is the right one for her. This article will enumerate the different types of breast prosthesis and give a brief description of each. Hopefully this will make it easier for women to choose which of them they should use.

Triangular Breast Form

The triangular breast form is the most popular type that most women choose. These are called as such because they have a triangular underside from which the breast protrudes forward. Though breasts are not triangular or rather pyramidal in shape, these breast prosthesis actually do a great job of mimicking a real breast especially when used with a bra that gives great support.

Another reason why triangular breast prosthesis is popular is because they are symmetrical which means that they can either be worn on the left or the right chest area. This also makes them cheaper since manufacturers do not need to make a separate left and right version of the forms.

Asymmetrical Breast Form

These forms have a small protrusion at the lower part that slightly goes under the person’s arm. These kinds of breast prosthesis are made for women whose mastectomy required the removal of tissue from the underarm as well. The problem with this type of breast form is that it can get caught up in most underwire bras so the person using an asymmetrical breast form should have a bra custom-made or just use a soft cup bra instead.

Teardrop Breast Form

These used to be the most popular type of breast form but not so much these days. These forms have an extended tail that gives them the shape of a teardrop. They are usually worn with the tail to the side to provide a full shape from under the arm.

The problem with this type of breast form is the same as with the asymmetrical type. It is hard to find a bra that can accommodate and hide a teardrop breast form. The person should consider having a custom fit bra if they choose this type.

Heart Shaped Breast Form

This is the newest shape that recently entered the market. One side of this breast form is flat which makes them ideal for low-cut dress or swimsuit. And unlike most of the other breast forms, these can be used with regular underwire bras. Just rotate them by at least 45 degrees or until they fit well.
